Sarah in Germany

Everything started off as a dream. A dream that IAESTE managed to make it happen. Thanks to this organization, I spent the best 7 weeks of my life in Stuttgart, Germany.

Leaving everything behind to start a new adventure by your own, is probably one of the challenges in life that help you strengthen your character. It wasn’t easy at the beginning. I felt like I was starting my life from scratch. But I always knew that I had a time limit, were my aim was to learn and establish new skills. I did not want to waste this opportunity and I tried to make the best out of it. This is by far the best decision that I have ever made in my life and I don’t regret anything about it.

I was working in an engineering firm for construction, where everyone at work was so welcoming. We had a coffee break at 10 am which was the best time where you can share your knowledge and discuss certain projects. Sometimes, they also used to hold some presentations during this break to introduce all the employees to the different projects that were happening concurrently. We were also allowed to have a break whenever we wanted to, as long as it was between 12pm to 2pm. Fortunately, I can say that I was lucky enough to be involved in various projects, even though I was staying for such a short period of time. I also improved my 2D drawing and 3D modelling skills and I also learned more about Solar Power Plants and how they are constructed. Apart from that, they were also really patient and helpful to teach me everything from the scratch and to introduce me to all the projects. I also had the opportunity to go on a construction site two times to do some spot checks.

After work, I used to meet with the other interns to grab a couple of beers, to have a barbeque, cook together, to go for a jog or else to go and discover Stuttgart. Apart from that, every Tuesday we used to have an IAESTE meeting, were we used to have an international dinner and then we used to head out and visit the city centre.  Moreover, the best thing about this internship, is that I lived in a dorm on a student’s campus. Thus, this was the perfect opportunity for me to get to know students from around the world. Apart from that, we made sure that every weekend we always travel to different places nearby Stuttgart or else to attend some event organised by the other IAESTE committees around Germany.

Thus, I can say that these 7 weeks were fully packed with activities and travelling, that I could barely gain enough rest, to be able to visit as many places as possible during my short stay! This is why, once again I would like to thank IAESTE for giving me this great opportunity, that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
