My IAESTE experience helped me grow up. – Dr. Edward Duca
My placement at the age of 19 was for work experience in a lab in Emden, Germany. I still remember it as one of the best summers of my life that combined mutating marine bacteria for industrial research with an amazing network of international friends also doing the IAESTE work placement. It helped develop my social and life skills while building the confidence I needed to go abroad after my undergraduate degree that culminated in a PhD in genetics (University of Edinburgh), followed by a change in career into science communication as the editor of Think magazine (University of Malta) and manager of the Science and Arts festival Science in the City.
